Safer access to PF pipework during shutdowns

A temporary access platform improved the maintenance sequence around a pulveriser turret.

← All projects

The brief

Removing and reinstalling pulveriser fuel-pipe elbows could take 6–18 hours, depending on the mill and work scope. Restricted elevated-work-platform positioning limited access to rear flange bolts, while crane access had to be maintained.

Design approach & deliverables

I modelled the turret and pipework, then developed a temporary platform fixed to existing flanges. The design considered ladder access, fall-restraint points and clearance for crane operations. I also prepared a disassembly and reassembly procedure covering work sequence, lifting equipment and coordination between crews.

The result

The access process is now used during shutdown maintenance. It saves multiple hours per service and, more importantly, provides safer access for personnel working on the PF pipes.
